What is Art-Fencing (Artistic Fencing)?

It used to be just an actors’, screen and stage stunt performers’ discipline before some years ago it became available to everyone who is enthusiastic about this extremely spectacular sport.

Art-fencing is a combination of fencing and acting skills, music, stage direction and magical theatrical atmosphere.

Art-fencing is really a unique sport. It gives everyone a chance to choose one’s own way in it. Sportsmen choose epochs, weapons and characters they feel comfortable with. One can practice art fencing irrespective of age and physique. The thing that matters most for newcomers is their wish to become a part of the art-fencing world. Apart from technical skills art-fencing develops expression, plastic arts, artistic skills.

The sportsmen take the roles of historical and literature characters, feel the tragedy, empathize and improve their personal qualities.

That is exactly what is meant by the lines of the official rules:

"Artistic fencing is the kind of sports activity that presupposes performing a rehearsed fencing combat or exercising with weapons in accordance with the competition rules.

Artistic fencing comprises fencing arts of all epochs, from the Antiquity up to contemporary times, as well as “timeless” or freestyle fencing.

Thrusting, and slashing-and-thrusting, either cutting or percussion kinds of weapons that are compliant with the chosen discipline are used in art fencing practice.

The use of stage analogues of any kind of weapon of any continent and their household counterparts is allowed in any performance, but it is obligatory that fencing techniques characteristic of some kind of European long-blade (long-shaft) cold weapon predominate.

The higher scores are given for using weapons that are as close to the originals in weight and size as possible."
